Our friends at a fintech scale up were facing two major pressures: skyrocketing operational costs and an urgent need for highly skilled engineering talent. The cost of hiring locally was pushing their budget to the limit—senior engineers in their region commanded salaries upwards of $190,000 annually, for the level of engineering they required.
They needed a solution that maintained their high standards for technical quality and communication while slashing costs.
Our Approach
After a deep dive into their requirements, we knew offshoring was the answer.
The key was finding engineers who could hit the ground running without compromising on quality. We focused our efforts on the Philippines and Indonesia—regions with strong pipelines of highly trained engineers.
Here’s what we did:
- Sourcing top-tier talent: We partnered with local companies known for their exceptional training programmes, ensuring the engineers had both strong technical foundations and advanced communication skills.
- Rigorous screening: From a pool of over 150 candidates, we shortlisted 15 engineers who underwent technical tests tailored to the client’s project needs. This included code challenges, debugging exercises, and system design evaluations.
- Final selection: After conducting comprehensive internal interviews, we presented five standout engineers to the client, all of whom were hired.
The results:
- Cost savings: The client saved approximately $300,000 annually in salaries—each offshore engineer earned around $40,000, a fraction of the local cost, without compromising quality.
- Improved delivery times: Projects that previously took 6–8 months were now being completed in 4–5 months thanks to the new team’s efficiency.
- Better utilisation of senior engineers: The offshore team took on day-to-day development tasks, allowing senior engineers to focus on high-impact strategic initiatives.
- Flexibility and scalability: By hiring on a contractual basis, the client avoided the $50,000+ administrative burden of setting up foreign entities and sidestepped complex compliance issues.
This wasn’t just about saving money; it was about building a scalable, agile team that drove better outcomes for the business.
